INTRODUCTION

1.0 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Local area network (LAN) is a household innovation that is gaining currency

in recent years. There are two technologies involved the wireless and the

wired technologies the wireless is the LAN technology that does not involve

the use of wires to interconnect the device but the wired LAN requires the use

of wires. Each of these technologies has its own merit and demerit.

As businesses expand and technology advances establishments with more

than one department wants to share information with ease. the modern age is

characterize by information and information explosion in fact the world is a

large store house of inexhaustible data or information every minute every

field of human endeavour produces more of this data huge amount being

created or modified it is obvious that so long as the human race exists large

amount of data will be produce every moment but this information must be

shared for it to achieve it desired purpose.

It is establish that it is more cost effective to share information than for each

department to source for it own information hence it is clear why this

innovation is most welcome another point to note is that of share of resources

such as hardware devices e.g. printers scanners etc. The local area network is

designed to provide the capacity for organization to share information and

resources.

The LAN is a communications network that interconnects a variety of data

communications devices within a small geographical area and broadcasts data

at high data transfer rate. LAN is a fast growing aspect of communication that

requires constant awareness to keep up with the trend of development of

technology and applications to run on devices hence the need for a

mechanism that impact this knowledge.

1.1 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This project seeks to address the problem of inconvenient and inadequate

dissemination of wired local area network innovative advancement and

knowledge by providing a system that avails this knowledge and training at

user’s convenience.

1.2 AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this project work is to develop an application that will provide

effective training in wired local area network for any interested user. The

specific objectives are to;

(a) Provide an easy and available system that would train users in wired

local area network and its technology.

(b) Create a system that will provide a one on one teaching and

examination to access users.

1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Due to the rapid rate of transformation in the world of wired local area

network (WLAN) it is imperative and necessary that there be a deliberate

effort to keep up with the trend of advancement hence the need for a system

that will provide easy and accessible source of this all important knowledge.

1.4 SCOPE OF STUDY

The scope of this project work covers only for tutorial in wired local area

network and its technologies.

1.5 LIMITATIONS

The limitation of this work is that the software will not be in a multimedia

form and the lectures will not cover for wireless LAN.

1.6 LIMITATIONS OF THE EXISTING SYSTEM

The existing system has some disadvantages which the proposed system

intends to address. Some of the disadvantages of the existing method of

transmitted wired local area network knowledge are that the system is not very

flexible and less inconvenient. It would be more interesting if student can have

the opportunity of learning at their own pace at their own convenient time but

is not possible the existing system. As is a must that student must converge on

particular days time and venue for them to be able to learn which can be

really inconvenient at the particular time. Due to circumstances a lecturer

cannot always be in the class to provide the desired teaching if such a

situation arises student will not be able to go on. Also the interval between a

lectures and another might be wide this can also affect students as it might be

difficult for them to remember what they where taught. Student would want to

study on their own in the hostel or at home given this kind of arrangement

that would be difficult.

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

(a) Network: Is the interconnection of communication device.

(b) LAN: Local area network.

(c) WLAN: wireless or wired local area network.
